First, they were leaving. Then they were considering staying. Then they were staying. Now, Boise State is officially leaving the Mountain West Conference after the school sent in its letter of resignation Saturday, according to a report by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The report cites UNLV president Neal Smatresk who said the Boise State sent in the letter of resignation before Saturday's midnight deadline. Boise State will forfeit $2.5 million as an exit penalty, but by beating the resignation deadline, the Broncos will not face additional penalties.

If Boise State had failed to meet the imposed deadline, they would have had to pay an additional $5 million fee plus forfeit their final year of league revenue which could be as much as $24 million.

The Broncos will play football in the Big East beginning in 2013, but were hesitating leaving the MWC recently due to complications with their non-football sports. The placement of their non-football sports is still unknown.
