A 19-year-old woman was shot five times and left to die in the doorway of a Canton home early Sunday morning. And police have charged her boyfriend with the crime.

So far, no one knows what prompted the deadly shooting, and it was unclear if officers have ever dealt with the couple before.

But Cherokee County investigators said they lived together at the River Ridge Apartments in Canton.

At the time of the shooting, Ms. Dejanirra Elrod was visiting a relative nearby at 370 Pea Ridge Road, and it was that relative who called 911 around 12:45 a.m. to report the shooting, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

When officers arrived, they found the 19-year-old with five gunshot wounds, the sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said.

"She had been shot near the doorway of the home," Lt. Baker said. "Elrod was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital where she later died of her injuries."

No one witnessed the shooting, though the relative was home and immediately tried to call for help. But the teen's boyfriend, Mr. Trevor Nuckles, 21, stopped her.

"When the homeowner tried to call 911, Nuckles grabbed her phone and threw it to the ground before leaving the scene on foot," Lt. Baker said.

A lookout was given for Mr. Nuckles who was found walking near the River Ridge Apartments, Lt. Baker said.

Mr. Nuckles was taken into custody and the Cobb County Sheriff's Office K-9 Team searched the woods between the crime scene and where the boyfriend was apprehended, the lieutenant said.

They found a 9mm handgun, believed to be the murder weapon, about 50 yards from the crime scene in the woods off Pine Grove Road, Lt. Baker said.

Deputies have charged Mr. Nuckles with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and obstruction of a 911 Call, Lt. Baker said.

He was being held without bond at the Cherokee County jail.
