Casino Waitresses in Pennsylvania Sue Over Maternity Policy
insurancejournal.com | Jul 17th 2012Two former cocktail servers at a Philadelphia-area casino say they lost their jobs after becoming pregnant because of an unfair weight policy.
The complaint filed earlier this month against Parx Casino in Bensalem says the two waitresses were forced out of their jobs as "Parkettes" because of their pregnancies.
The suit says the women were told they could only continue as cocktail servers until their uniforms no longer fit. After that they would have to move to jobs as concession stand workers.
Parx officials tell the Philadelphia Daily News they now supply maternity uniforms to pregnant cocktail waitresses.
A weight policy remains in effect. Parx chief counsel Thomas Bonner says the policy is appropriate because Parkettes are entertainers who take part in photo shoots and other promotional activities.
