Richard Branson Will Fly in Virgin's Maiden Space Voyage

Branson made the announcement that he would be aboard his companies 'first space-flight today at the Farnborough Air Show in Southwest England.

The eccentric billionaire, who this year has launched his Virgin Gaming website to great success, as well as campaigning for marijuana legalisation in the UK parliament, unveiled a to scale replica of the six-passenger SS2 spaceship he will take his.

When the actual SS2 is ready to blast off from Spaceport America in New Mexico (the first runway dedicated to commercial space travel), Branson and his immediate family will be the first tour group to make the 60-mile, two-hour trip to space.

The fully operational SS2 will blast off from the New Mexico spaceport when ready, and the first flight will comprise of Branson and his immediate family.

That is not to say, however, that he is bereft of other paying customers – 529 potential customers have already pledged interest in becoming 'citizen astronauts, including celebrities and world renowned physicist Steven Hawking.

The venture will not come cheap; space-travellers can expect to part with $200,000 for the two-hour flight, but as technology improves, infrastructure increases and mass production ensues, the programme could become affordable in the coming years.
