A 19-year-old Woodstock man was allegedly driving drunk when police said he caused a wreck that killed another teen and injured man in Marietta last month.
Cobb County police have charged Mr. Gabriel Tuesta-Hidalgo with first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, DUI under 21 and improper U-turn, officials said Friday.
The two-vehicle collision happened shortly after 11 p.m. on May 28 at the intersection of Piedmont and Bells Ferry roads, police spokesman Officer Michael Bowman said.
Investigators said that Mr. Michael Williams, 26, of Marietta, was driving a 2006 Kia Sorento eastbound on Barrett Parkway at the same time Mr. Hidalgo was driving a 1990 Mazda Miata westbound on Piedmont Road.
Both vehicles were heading towards Bells Ferry Road that Monday night, Officer Bowman said.
"As the Kia was crossing Bells Ferry Road, the driver of the Mazda initiated a u-turn from westbound Piedmont Road to eastbound Piedmont Road," Officer Bowman said. "As the Mazda was turning, the Kia collided with it at the passenger side door, fatally injuring the passenger."
Mr. Laquan Hilton, 17, of Acworth, died at the scene, he said.
Mr. Hidalgo and Mr. Williams were both transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in stable condition after the wreck.
Mr. Hidalgo remained in the Cobb County jail Saturday, according to jail records.
