LA landlord discounts rent to tenants who adopt a homeless dog

LA landlord discounts rent to tenants who adopt a homeless dog

We're surrounded by landlords who won't allow tenants to own dogs, especially dogs of certain breeds.

Which is why Los Angeles realtor and landlord Sandy Zalagens is so special.

She offers a discount on a tenant's rent - but only if they adopt a dog in need of a home.

In the case of Big Louie, an 80-pound pit bull who was abandoned by his family and left to fend for himself, Zalagens offered a $150 monthly discount for the tenant who adopted him.

A woman named Jessie McElwee took Zalagens up on the offer, and she's now Big Louie's mom. The dog also has a kitten sibling whom he enjoys snuggling with in his new comfortable home.

Zalagens has done a lot more for the animals than this: she's been campaigning for rescue dogs since 2005 and, every time she sells a house, she sponsors a rescue dog.

She says that too often, pets get left behind when a family loses their home and is forced to rent - and this is made worse by landlords who don't allow pets.

Animal shelters have confirmed that intake has increased due to the housing crisis and Zalagens said she felt she had to do something about this.

She is compiling a list of pet-friendly landlords in hopes of ending breed discrimination in the rental market. She welcomes all dogs, but has admitted a soft spot for pit bulls.

Thank you to Zalagens for your compassion and for all you do for the animals! We wish more landlords would follow your lead so that families can keep their beloved pets with them when they rent.
