"Wayne is off to the hospital and it looks as if he will be out for four weeks," Ferguson said. "We have to take care of these things in terms of infection, but hopefully he will be OK. Rodallega followed through with his shot and has obviously caught him, but it was an accident, of course. It looked a really bad one, though."

United were impressive and dominant without Rooney during the first-half, particularly after Van Persie had opened the scoring with a stunning left-foot half-volley.

"It was a good goal, a difficult goal, but it was a good cross from [Patrice] Evra," the Dutchman said. "The ball bounced just before it came to me, so I had to time it well, and I did. It was a tight angle, but luckily it went in."

Ferguson, who left out Portuguese forward Nani from his squad altogether, added: "It was a fantastic finish, absolutely brilliant. It lifted the place. After that, we played really well.

"You saw two sides of Manchester United. It was cruise control, but a terrible mistake for the second goal and it becomes a match."

Ferguson's counterpart Martin Jol said he could still keep striker Clint Dempsey at Fulham, despite omitting him from the squad due to the forward's desire to move to Liverpool.

Jol said: "I haven't seen him much but if no-one comes, we can't send him to a non-league team or send him on loan to Stevenage.

"We will have to keep him, sit down with him, but maybe something will happen this week."
