New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS) Posing as crime reporters, the two would extort money from NGOs and businessmen by threatening to expose them in the media but were exposed and arrested, police said Saturday.

Mithun Singh Rajput, 24 and Gursharan Kaur, 37, both residents of Delhi, were running an extortion racket for the last couple of years wherein they posed as crime reporters of a weekly newspaper "Rashtra Ki Aawaz- Aaj Tak", police said.

They would approach businessmen and NGO's and would threaten to expose their 'negative' deeds if they failed to give them the amount of money asked.

Afraid, many would give in and accept their demands.

The arrests Friday came following a complaint by an NGO, Jeevan Anmol- Nasha Mukti Kendra, in north Delhi's Karawal Nagar that the two accused had visited them Thursday and had asked for Rs. 50,000.

"The duo said that if the money was not given they would force the NGO to shut down by negatively highlighting it in the media," said a police official.

The duo visited the NGO Friday and was handed over Rs.10,000. When they demanded Rs.30,000 more, the complainant called police leading to their arrest.
