Georgia football: Bulldogs staff member Tony Gilbert leaves UGA to join Auburn

ATHENS, Ga. -- Tony Gilbert's stay on the staff of his alma mater lasted only one year.

The former Georgia linebacker is leaving Georgia, where he was on the strength and conditioning staff, to become a graduate assistant at Auburn. The Macon native announced the news on his Twitter feed.

Gilbert is set to reunite with Brian VanGorder, who was Gilbert's defensive coordinator at Georgia and is entering his first year in that job at Auburn.

Gilbert was serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coordinator, earning $35,000 per year.

The departure completes an overhaul -- which was apparently unintended -- of the strength and conditioning staff. All of the assistants working under second-year coordinator Joe Tereshinski have left in the offseason: Keith Gray to the Philadelphia Eagles, Thomas Brown (another former Georgia player) to a coaching job at Chattanooga and Rex Bradberry for a job with the U.S. Special Forces.

John Kasay Jr., who had served in a part-time role on the staff, also has left.

Tereshinski has said that he didn't force anybody out, that everybody left for a better job. But with the positions open, he hired experts who give the staff an entire new look:

• John Thomas, who ran Joe Paterno's strength program at Penn State for two decades, was hired as asso

ciate director.

• Sherman Armstrong was hired as a speed coach.

Gilbert was a three-year starter at Georgia at linebacker and a captain on the 2002 SEC championship team. VanGorder was the defensive coordinator. Gilbert went on to spend eight years in the NFL, six with Jacksonville and two with Atlanta.
