The Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot in the head by the Taliban in retaliation for her work in advocating for girls' education continues to show signs of recovery at the British hospital where she is being treated.

The hospital released the first photograph of Malala Yousafzai with her eyes open since she was shot on Oct. 9. The image was circulated widely on social media.

As I wrote in my story with John Burns on Friday, doctors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where she was admitted this week, said Ms. Yousafzai was standing up with assistance and communicating by writing.

Since the shooting, her case has generated worldwide interest in the news media, as well as among public officials and complete strangers offering to help her.
