Greek Election Too Close to Call

Greek Election Too Close to Call

thedailybeast.com | Jun 17th 2012 12:16 PM

The first exit polls to come in from Greece's elections Sunday showed a race too close to call, with the New Democracy party maintaining a razor-thin 0.5 percent lead. All eyes have been on the country leading up to Sunday's run-off, as the leading Syriza and New Democracy parties battled for control of the country--a fight that may determine the future of the euro. The leftist Syriza party opposes austerity measures that are critical for the country's bailout deal, and the party's popularity has worried observers who do not want to see Greece exit the 17-nation common currency. New Democracy controlled between 27.5 and 30.5 percent of the vote and Syriza held down 27 to 30 percent in a race that will continue to keep Europe on tenterhooks.
