Week Ahead: Supreme Court decisions, Holder contempt, deadlines

Decisions from the Supreme Court highlight a busy week for all three branches of government.

It's a week of deadlines.

The Supreme Court should announce its decision on President Obama's healthcare law this week as it's scheduled to do so by the end of the month. The announcement could come either Monday or Thursday. The court also is expected to announce its decision on Arizona's controversial immigration law.

For Congress, the interest rate on student loans expires at the end of the month, as does federal funding for highway programs, unless the legislative branch renews them.

Plus, House GOP leaders have vowed to hold a contempt vote on Attorney General Eric Holder this week if he doesn't hand over the documents requested in the Fast and Furious gun-walking operation.

Obama is starting his week on the road, heading Northwest and then down South for campaign fundraisers.

Monday, June 25

President Obama will be in Boston and New Hampshire. He'll speak at Oyster River High School in Durham, N.H., in the morning. In the evening he'll address a fundraiser at the Symphony Hall in Boston.

Vice President Biden will be campaigning in Hamilton, Ohio.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) will host 10 postal activists from across the country as they begin a hunger strike to protest a 2006 Congressional mandate to prefund retirement benefits for postal workers 75 years in advance. The event begins at 10 a.m. in the House triangle.

Tuesday, June 26

Obama speaks at a campaign fundraiser at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta. He'll then address a fundraiser at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami.

Biden begins a two-day campaign swing in Eastern Iowa. On his first day, he meets with United Auto Workers in Waterloo.

Mitt Romney will be campaigning in Virginia, holding an event in Salem.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) is favored to win his primary while Rep. Charles Rangel (R-N.Y.) faces one of the toughest primaries of his political career. Polls close in Utah at 10 p.m. ET and polls in New York close at 9 p.m. ET.

First lady Michelle Obama will join Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn at the Illinois National Guard Armory in Chicago as he signs into law the "Military Family Licensing Act," which will help military spouses and veterans transfer their professional licenses to Illinois more easily. The event begins at 3:15 p.m. ET.

Holly Petraeus, who helps lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's office of servicemember affairs and is the wife of CIA Director David Petraeus, and Beau Biden, Delaware's attorney general and son of Vice President Joe Biden, will testify before the Senate Banking Committee. They will discuss how well protected the nation's fighting forces are in the consumer financial marketplace. The hearing takes place at 10 a.m. in 538 Dirksen.

The Hill hosts an invitation-only reception and book signing for retired Gov. Ed Rendell (D-Pa.).

Wednesday, June 27

Members of Congress head to the White House for the annual congressional picnic.

Obama meets with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed at the White House.

Biden wraps up his campaign swing in Iowa with an event in Dubuque.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton begins a three-day trip to Finland, Latvia, and Russia.

House and Senate leaders will award the Congressional Gold Medal to the Montford Point Marines in a ceremony in Emancipation Hall of the Capitol Visitor Center.

Thursday, June 28

The Commerce Department will release the government's final estimate on economic growth in the first quarter of the year, after last determining in May it grew 1.9 percent during that time.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson testifies before the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee at 10 a.m. in 2318 Rayburn.

The 51st annual Congressional Baseball Game takes place at Nationals Park at 7 p.m.

Friday, June 29

Last votes in the House are expected around 3 p.m.
