A transatlantic US Airways flight from Paris to Charlotte has been diverted to an airport in Maine after reports of a passenger acting suspiciously.
Two F-15 fighters were scrambled to escort the plane into the airport at Bangor, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad).
The transportation security administration said US Airways flight 787 landed safely in Bangor. "TSA is aware of reports of a passenger who exhibited suspicious behavior during flight. Out of an abundance of caution the flight was diverted to BGR [Bangor] where it was met by law enforcement," the statement said.
A person briefed on the incident said a passenger claimed she had a surgically implanted device.
Andrew Christie, a spokesman for US Airways, said the jet had 179 passengers and nine crew members on board, and was diverted around noon Tuesday to Bangor international airport. He says there was a "security issue" on the flight.
According to CNN, the House of Representatives homeland security committee chairman Peter King's office said that the woman gave flight crew a note saying that she had an explosive device implanted in her body.
The passenger was from Cameroon and had boarded with no luggage, CNN said.
The flight departed Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris earlier Tuesday morning and is now scheduled to leave Maine and head to Charlotte Tuesday afternoon.
