Liberal comedian Bill Maher grilled conservative pundit Ann Coulter Friday about her new book that says some Democrats are race mongers - at one point implying she was like a Confederate leader.

Maher read a series of quotes from Coulter's new book, "Mugged:Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama," and ask her to explain herself.

The host of HBO's "Real Time" read: "You cannot transform the Negro into anything one-tenth as useful or as good as what slavery enables them to be."

"What, that's not me," Coulter said.

"No, that's Jefferson Davis. You're right. I'm so sorry. I mixed that up," Maher quipped, comparing her to the Confederate leader.

Coulter countered, saying that conservative African Americans are often subject to racist attacks.

"Liberals are very racist," Coulter said. "I mean the attacks on [Supreme Court Justice] Clarence Thomas, [GOP Utah congressional candidate] Mia Love, that lovely [actress] Stacy Dash," Coulter said. "If you want to see racism in America, present them with a conservative black person."

Later in the segment, Maher asked her opinion about GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who she didn't at first support during the Republican primaries, opting instead for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

"Briefly I admit I ran off with a biker. I ran off with Chris Christie. But I came back to the responsible choice," she said.
