Priscilla Buckley, R.I.P

Priscilla and Bill Buckley in 1983
NATIONAL REVIEW ARCHIVES

Remembering Priscilla Buckley

Den Mother
CHRISTOPHER BUCKLEY

Of my thousand memories of my beloved Aunt Pitts, an early one is of visiting the old NR offices at 150 East 35th Street when I was maybe eight, so it would have been 1960 or so. Pup (a.k.a. WFB) pointed out to me with amusement the dumbwaiter in his office. It's possible that he was the only editor-in-chief of a journal of opinion who had a dumbwaiter in his office. (No jokes, please.)

When he finished writing an editorial on his trademark yellow paper, he would place the copy in the dumbwaiter and ring a bell and hoist it aloft―to the office of his older sister, Priscilla, NR's managing editor.

As I think on it, this arrangement is a perfect metaphor for their relationship. She was only five feet tall, Pitts, but Pup looked up to her all his life. He adored her. I don't think it's exaggeration to say that without Pitts, there might not have been an NR. Or if there had been, it certainly wouldn't have been as good, or come out every two weeks. Or have been nearly as much fun for those who worked there. She made the trains run on time, and she made everyone laugh. She became a kind of den mother to the modern conservative movement, cherished by everyone who knew her in that role, from George Will to Garry Wills. Quite a spectrum, that.

Pitts never married or had children of her own. She had 50 nieces and nephews, too many of whom lost their mothers at a too-early age. Pitts became their mother. (She even delivered one of her nieces — Priscilla O'Reilly — when her sister Maureen couldn't make it to the hospital in time.) She was unfailing in love, always there for you. So perhaps Pitts ended up having more children than any of her brothers and sisters. She was to the Buckley family what the rock of Gibraltar is to the Mediterranean.

Bless you, Pitts, and bon voyage on your latest ballooning adventure into the heavens.

Mr. Buckley is editor-at-large of ForbesLife magazine and a columnist for the Daily Beast.

Thanks for the Fun

Trayvon

From
NATIONAL REVIEW:

The fatal encounter of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla., left Martin shot to death, Zimmerman in hiding, and the Occupy movement joining Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson in the streets. If Zimmerman, the neighborhood-watch volunteer who killed Martin, committed a crime beforehand — e.g., assault, which he might have committed by following Martin in a threatening manner — then the state's "stand your ground" law, which allows armed Floridians to shoot in self-defense even outside their own homes, does not apply, even if Martin attacked in turn. But we do not yet know what happened, apart from the tragic denouement. That's why we have investigations. Prodding the investigators is one thing. But now we are in the court of spectacle, as Spike Lee retweets Zimmerman's purported address (which turns out actually to belong to a bewildered elderly couple), the New Black Panther party offers a $10,000 reward for his "capture" ("an eye for an eye," a spokesman explained), and theNew York Times debuts a new racial category, "white Hispanic" (Zimmerman's mother was Peruvian, but that disrupts the racial narrative). President Obama commented on the case, perhaps fearing that Sharpton would call him a white black if he did not. We say, let justice be done.

One of Hollywood's Finest
"John Ford passionately loves freedom," President Nixon said on March 31, 1973. "John Ford, in his works, has depicted freedom in all of its profound depths. . . . John Ford has fought for freedom, and for that reason it is appropriate that tonight, on behalf of all of the American people, he receives the Medal of Freedom."

The son of Irish immigrants (his real name was John Martin Feeney), director John Ford gave generations of moviegoers his vision of America in dozens of beloved Hollywood films— movies such as Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), The Searchers (1956), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). But some of his work took place far from American shores.

Though already a famous director, Ford joined the Navy during World War II and put together a unit of film crews to document much of the war. In June 1942 he filmed the Battle of Midway from atop the island's powerhouse, a primary target for Japanese bombers. At one point a piece of flying concrete hit him on the head and knocked him out. He came to, grabbed his camera, and kept shooting. When shrapnel tore a hole in his arm, he kept relaying information about the battle's progress to officers on the ground.

Ford went in harm's way from the Pacific to North Africa to the Normandy coast. On D-Day, he oversaw cameramen filming the Allied invasion. After the war, while he continued his legendary Hollywood career, he held the rank of rear admiral in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Perhaps in part because he knew the cost of freedom, Ford spent a lifetime interpreting his nation's heritage. He accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the country's highest civilian honors, with the words, "God bless America."

Setser v. US

Setser v. United States

Justia.com Opinion Summary: When petitioner was indicted in a Texas court on drug charges, the State also moved to revoke the probation term that he was then serving for another drug offense. At about the same time, petitioner pleaded guilty to federal drug charges. At issue was whether a district court, in sentencing a defendant for a federal offense, had authority to order that the federal sentence be consecutive to an anticipated state sentence that had not yet been imposed. The Sentencing Reform Act of 1984, 18 U.S.C. 3584(a), addressed the concurrent-vs.-consecutive decision, but not the situation here, since the District Court did not impose "multiple terms of imprisonment... at the same time," and petitioner was not "already subject to" the state sentence at issue. This did not mean that the District Court lacked authority to act as it did and that the Bureau of Prisons was to make the concurrent-vs.-consecutive decision after the federal sentence had been imposed. It was more natural to read section 3584(a) as leaving room for the exercise of judicial discretion in situations not covered than it was to read section 3621(b) as giving the Bureau what amounted to sentencing authority. Because it was within the District Court's discretion to order that petitioner's sentence run consecutively to his anticipated state sentence in the probation revocation proceeding; and because the state court's subsequent decision to make that sentence concurrent with its other sentence did not establish that the District Court abused its discretion by imposing an unreasonable sentence; the Court affirmed the judgment of the Fifth Circuit.
